Supporters of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo, formerly of the University of North Dakota, have until Tuesday to turn in their petitions to put the issue on the June primary ballot.

Organizer Sean Johnson told The Grand Forks Herald that the effort is within "striking distance" of the 13,500 signatures required. If successful, the law that eliminated the nickname and logo will be suspended until the June election.

Separately, supporters are circulating a petition to amend the state constitution in favor of the nickname and logo. The deadline to collect 27,000 signatures is August 8.
