Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, who has claimed Cherokee ancestry, has been cast as the Indian best friend in the TV series based on the Sheriff Walt Longmire book series.

Phillips will play Henry Standing Bear, the best friend of the sheriff. Author Craig Johnson has said the character is based on Marcus Red Thunder, a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

The Longmire mystery novels are set on a reservation in Wyoming. The pilot was mainly shot in New Mexico and the series, due to air on A&E, will be shot there as well.
