Hospital hires doctor to treat diabetes among Indian patients

The San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, New Mexico, has hired its first endocrinologist, who will specialize in treating diabetes among Indian patients.

Dr. George Ang said building trust is important while working in Indian Country. ""They don't like another specialist telling them they have to do this and this. That doesn't really work, scaring them into shaping up," he told The Farmington Daily Times.

More than 16 percent of the Indian population in New Mexico suffers from diabetes, according to the diabetic education coordinator at the hospital. The statewide rate is 10 percent.
