Editor: Grand Forks Herald will stop using 'Fighting Sioux' name

"Beginning this week, the Herald will phase out use of the terms Sioux and Fighting Sioux to describe UND’s athletic teams.

We’ll also stop using the logo that accompanies these names.

Our intent is to end these usages immediately, but some uses may occur inadvertently for a time. Both the nickname and logo are deeply entrenched, in our minds and in our computer systems.

Some usages can’t be avoided. The logo will show up in photographs, for example, because the UND men’s hockey team will continue to use jerseys emblazoned with it. The nickname could show up in quotations. We don’t put words in people’s mouths, and we don’t take them out either."
