Column: 'Fighting Sioux' feud far from over in North Dakota

"It’s football season, so it’s only fitting the state steps up and kicks the old ball around a bit longer.

It’s what will happen Monday when the North Dakota Legislature meets in special session.

Our politicians are expected to repeal the state law they passed earlier in the year mandating that the University of North Dakota keep the Fighting Sioux nickname.

They’ll boot the ball back to the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education to revive the process of retiring the Fighting Sioux name.

You all may be familiar with the old comic strip where Lucy would pull the football away just as Charlie Brown rushed forward to kick it. Ol’ Charlie would go flailing through the air before smacking down hard on his butt.

That’s where we are these days, it seems. Lucy and Charlie Brown, playing ball with the Fighting Sioux name."
