DOI official reaffirms support for fix to land-into-trust ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar must be overturned, a top Interior Department official said on Tuesday.

Deputy secretary David Hayes spoke about the case at the 68th annual National Congress of American Indians conference in Portland, Oregon. He said all tribes, regardless of the date of federal recognition, should be able to follow the land-into-trust process.

Congress has considered a fix but it has not been enacted into law since the February 2009 ruling. Tribes say the uncertainty is affecting economic development, law enforcement, housing and other projects.
