Fewer in support of taxation of tribal tobacco in New York

Support is dropping for New York state's efforts to impose taxes on the sale of tobacco in Indian Country, according to a poll commissioned by The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

Of 500 likely Monroe County voters, 50 percent opposed the state's efforts. Only 46 percent said they supported taxation while 4 percent were undecided.

The results appear to show a shift in public opinion. In the 2010 Voice of the Voter poll, 40 percent opposed the state while 53 percent supported taxation and 7 percent were undecided.

However, when the margin of error is taken into account, pollster Larry Harris said the results show that people are evenly divided on the issue.
