House backs Alaska Native corporation land swap, project

By a voice vote, the House passed H.R.441, the Kantishna Hills Renewable Energy Act, on Monday.

The bill allows Doyon Ltd., an Alaska Native regional corporation, to build a 50-kilowatt power plant, a small dam and a small pipeline within Denali National Park and Preserve. The project will provide electricity to Kantishna Roadhouse, a lodge in the park that's owned by the corporation.

To facilitate the project, the bill authorizes a 10-acre swap between Doyon and the federal government. The National Park Service supports the bill.
