Grand Traverse Band questioned for tribal government layoffs

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan has begun to lay off some employees of the tribal government.

Exact numbers weren't reported but anywhere from 10-15 jobs are being eliminated. Arlene Kashata already lost her position as a substance abuse counselor.

“I’m angry, hurt, upset and insulted,” Kashata told the tribal council last week, The Leelanau Enterprise reported. “And I’m very concerned about my department and the excellent services it provides to so many tribal members.”

The tribe has faced a budget crunch. In 2008, the tribal council controlled an $57 million but last year it was down to $46 million, the paper reported.
