Grand Ronde Tribes accept return of oldest known river canoe

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde in Oregon recently reclaimed a piece of their history.

The tribe accepted the return of the oldest known Kalapuya river canoe from the Willamette Heritage Center at The Mill. The canoe is now on display at tribal headquarters.

"This is a time when many wrongs are being set right. With this gift, healing continues for both of us. It is an honorable, righteous deed," said Chairwoman Cheryle Kennedy, The Salem Statesman Journal reported.

The Kalapuya are one of the tribes that make up the Grand Ronde confederation.
