'Providing the Chinook Tribe with a beautiful canoe last weekend to replace one expropriated by the Lewis and Clark Expedition 205 years ago was a magnificent gesture on the part of the Clark family.

It was a valid healing exercise. But it also was a reminder of just how difficult it is to provide real redress for the civilization-destroying wrongs suffered by Columbia estuary Indians in the harsh aftermath of contact with European-Americans.

On the healing side of the justice equation, the sincerity of Clark family descendants is inspirational. By symbolically restoring an important tribal asset that was taken without permission two centuries ago, they’ve shown an honesty and consistency that would make their famous ancestor proud."
