Editorial: Hypocrisy all over for arrest of Navajo school leader

"The recent shameful arrest of a school board president reeks of hypocrisy.

Central Consolidated School District already is awash in internal strife and conflict, as parents, workers and administrators are divided and at odds over everything from graduation requirements to disputes about office closings and personnel decisions.

Sitting right at the front of the charge for many of the ongoing changes occurring with the district, for better or for worse, is school board president Matthew Tso.

Tso also serves as board of trustee member for San Juan College, giving him even more influence over a wider spectrum of students in our community.

Two Navajo police officers found what was thought to be an abandoned vehicle in south Shiprock at almost midnight on July 29. Instead, they found Tso and another man, both believed to be intoxicated. Tso was arrested and soon placed on leave from his full-time job with the Department of Diné Education.

Then, in another lack of respect of the law, the Shiprock police refused to release the arrest report, openly defying Navajo law that calls the document a matter of public record."
