Phil Busey: Tribes in Oklahoma provide boost to the economy

"The legacy of Oklahoma is “Indian Territory.” As Oklahomans we are missing the opportunity to forge lasting partnerships between tribes and state government to fuel Oklahoma’s economy.

Leaders speak of a pro-business commitment in Oklahoma. Yet they leave out one of the largest strengths setting us apart from other states for future growth. We must fully appreciate the contributions tribes make to our state and economy.

Rising from tragedy, Oklahoma’s tribes are impressive business entities. With job creation and billion dollar impacts they rival Fortune 500s. There are significant incentives and resources for companies doing business in “Indian country.”Oklahoma leadership still struggles to recognize the unequivocal importance of tribal governments to our success

The tribes are sovereign governments established under federal law. With this status comes federal funding used for social programs, education, health care, road construction and infrastructure within the counties they reside."
