Taos Pueblo leader shoots cow that wandered onto reservation

A leader for Taos Pueblo in New Mexico said he shot and killed a "problem cow" that wandered onto the reservation.

The cow belonged to Burton Enterprises, a non-Indian ranching company. It was grazing on private land before it entered the reservation.

"There is no dispute going on. There never has been a dispute," war chief Edwin Concha told The Taos News in response to the incident.

Burton said it wanted the tribe to address the situation and hold someone "responsible." But since the incident took place in Indian Country, it's unlikely anyone will take action against Concha.

Other ranchers who graze their cattle near the reservation and near federal forest land said they are worried about the safety of their herds.
