Santa Fe Indian Market hits a snag as city raises taxation issues

More than 200 artists might not be able to sell their goods at the 90th annual Santa Fe Indian Market this weekend due to a taxation issue.

The city of Santa Fe claims some artists owe back taxes to the state and that others lack taxpayer identification numbers. The issue came up Tuesday -- just days before the popular event kicks off.

"What we don't understand is why they waited until the last moment to do this," Bruce Bernstein, the executive director of Southwestern Association of Indian Arts, told The Santa Fe New Mexican. "The city always has been a good partner. We're not sure why there's a problem now."

Bernstein said the market draws 100,000 people to Santa Fe, generating $140 million for the economy.
