Opinion: Indian youth share their concerns at Intertribal Summit

"Last week I had the privilege of traveling to Santa Fe, N.M., to join 170 American Indian and Alaska Native young men and women from across the country for the 2011 National Intertribal Youth Summit.

Many United States attorneys, like myself, joined officials from the White House, and the departments of Justice, Interior, Health and Human Services and Education, in listening to an often unheard segment of our society — the youth of Indian Country.

Representing Montana at this Summit was Treyton Bow, Davis Cravens, Jayda Jackson and Damica McConnell from the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Reservation. I left the summit with great hope for our future.

The summit had several important goals — first and foremost, the primary goal was to listen to the youth of Indian Country."
