Police officer shooting reported at Little Earth housing complex

A Minneapolis, Minnesota, police officer was involved in a shooting at the Little Earth of United Tribes public housing complex.

Officer Terry Nutter shot Leroy Martinez, 23, on Monday night. Police say Martinez pointed a gun at Nutter and other officers responded to gunfire at the housing complex.

An eyewitness, however, gave a different account. Delora Iceman told The Minneapolis Star Tribune that Martinez had already thrown his gun on the ground and was holding up his hands when he was shot.

Nutter works off-duty at the housing complex. Little Earth president and CEO Bill Ziegler described him as a "great officer." "This is one of the officers that I totally trust," Ziegler told the paper.

Martinez has been charged with second-degree assault. He allegedly shot someone near the playground at the housing complex.
