Cherokee Nation to inaugurate Joe Crittenden as deputy chief

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will swear in Joe Crittenden as deputy chief this Sunday, August 14.

Crittenden won the position in the tribe's June 25 election. But since the results of the principal chief's race were thrown out due to uncertainty he will run the tribe until the new election.

“It is a testament to the stability of the government of our great Nation that we can have a smooth and peaceful transition under these unusual circumstances even while the candidates for principal chief continue spirited campaigns," Crittenden said in a statement, The Cherokee Phoenix reported.

Incumbent chief Chad Smith will face challenger Bill John Baker in the September 24 election.
