Supreme Court of Cherokee Nation orders new election for chief

The Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has ordered a new election for principal chief.

In a decision today, the court said it was "impossible to determine the election result with mathematical certainty." The results of the June 25 election were declared to be "invalid."

The decision means incumbent Chad Smith will face challenger Bill John Baker, a council member, for one more time. A date for the new election has to be scheduled.
