Recount gives Chad Smith the edge in Cherokee Nation election

The drama continues in the principal chief's race for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

After a recount that took two days, incumbent Chad Smith says he's up by 5 votes. That's close to the "official" results from June 27, when the tribe's election commission said he defeated challenger Bill John Baker by 7 votes.

But that's different from the "certified" count on June 30, when the election commission said Baker won by 266 votes. The two sides will now go back to the tribe's Supreme Court on Tuesday.
