County passes bill to support return of land to Onondaga Nation

The Onondaga County Legislature voted 11-8 on a non-binding resolution to transfer land to the Onondaga Nation in New York.

The tribe wants to reclaim the 36-acre Murphy's Island, on the Onondaga Lake shoreline. The site is considered sacred because the Peacemaker traveled across the lake to the area.

A transfer is far down the line because the land is currently being used as a state park. And the tribe won't accept the land until pollution is removed, Tadodaho Sid Hill, the spiritual leader of the tribe, said in an online chat with The Syracuse Post-Standard.
