Sault Tribe won't hold special election to replace chairman

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan won't be holding a special election to choose a new chairman.

Tribal leaders previously indicated they would ask voters to replace Darwin "Joe" McCoy, who unexpectedly resigned earlier this month. But after reviewing election ordinances, the council said it would have to appoint a new chair.

“Our goal is to make sure we are following our constitution and tribal laws, which clearly state that calling a special election in this instance would be prohibited,” acting chair Lana Causley said in a press release. “On behalf of the entire board, I apologize for any confusion caused surrounding this issue.”
