Dine College breaks tradition with class about ceremonies

Dine College on the Navajo Nation is breaking tribal traditions in order to preserve them.

Harry Walters, who is a medicine man, is offering a class in Navajo ceremonies. Students will be allowed to take notes and will learn about ceremonies in Navajo and English.

"The goal is to get students familiarized with what ceremonies are and how they are used," Walters told The Farmington Daily Times.

Francis Mitchell, another medicine man, isn't a part of the effort. He said his grandfather forbade him from taking notes or writing anything down about ceremonies.
