Lower Elwha Kallam Tribe elder celebrates 101st birthday





The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe celebrated the 101st birthday of its oldest member, Hazel Sampson.

Sampson was born on May 19, 1910. She is the oldest Klallam in Washington and in British Columbia.

“You all come back next year, I’ll be here,” Sampson told about 200 people at the tribal center, The Peninsula Daily News reported.

Sampson's father started the first Shaker Church on the North Olympic Peninsula. Her granddaughter founded Jamestown.
