Notah Begay combats diabetes and obesity in Indian youth

Navajo / Pueblo golfer Notah Begay III is hoping to reduce the rise of diabetes and obesity among Indian youth.

Begay knows the ravages of the disease first hand: his mother suffers from diabetes and one relative lost a foot. He tells youth that the problems are entirely preventable.

“We’re in a fight, literally, to save our kids’ lives,” Begay told The Associated Press in an interview. “The reassuring thing about this entire thing is that this is a fight we can win, but it’s not going to come without some monumental change.”

Begay has used his NB3 Foundation to raise more than $2 million in the last two years to encourage Indian youth to stay active and eat healthy foods.
