State claims Yakama Nation owes $11M in unpaid fuel tax

The state of Washington claims the Yakama Nation owes more than $11 million in unpaid fuel taxes.

Under a 1994 agreement, the tribe pays the state's tax on about 25 percent of fuel sold at their stations. But the Department of Licensing says the tribe hasn't submitted audits for 2007 through 2009.

"The bottom line is all along we have been working in good faith with the Yakama Nation and we're continuing to do that and we're following the steps outlined in the consent decree," department spokesperson Brad Benfield told The Yakima Herald-Republic.
