Bill authorizes water leases for Mescalero Apache Nation

Legislation introduced in the 112th Congress would allow the Mescalero Apache Nation to lease its water rights to other communities

The Mescalero Apache Tribe Leasing Authorization Act authorizes leases of up to 99 years. "This will provide the tribe with a valuable economic opportunity and the ability to provide water to people in the area," President Mark Chino said in a press release.

The House bill is H.R.1461. The Senate version is S.134.

The tribe's water rights were confirmed by a 1993 state court decision.
