More and more Alaska Natives are moving to urban areas in the state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Between 2000 and 2010, the Native population grew significantly in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Bethel. Meanwhile, villages and rural areas saw a decline in Native numbers. Despite the growth, only 8 percent of the population in Anchorage is Native. Only 7 percent of the population in Fairbanks is Native. Overall, 14.8 percent of the population in Alaska is American Indian or Alaska Native. Get the Story:
