Chairman of Lumbee Tribe wants HUD to audit housing funds

Chairman Purnell Swett of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has asked the Department of Housing and Urban Development for an immediate audit of the the tribe's housing program.

HUD conducts an audit of the program every year but Swett wants it to start early. "I now take this action to assure the tribal membership and the Tribal Council that I, nor my administration, have anything to hide," Swett said in a press release, The Fayetteville Observer reported.

The tribal council recently asked HUD to freeze the tribe's housing funds as part of an ongoing dispute with Swett. The council says Swett has refused to provide information about employment and consulting contracts.
