North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple (R) said he will sign a bill to save the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the University of North Dakota

The bill passed the state Senate after being placed on the calendar today. Previously, news reports said it wouldn't be considered until next week.

The bill already passed the state House. It bars the North Dakota Board of Higher Education from getting rid of the name as part of a settlement with the NCAA. The NCAA could now take some form of action against UND.

“The ball is now in the court of the NCAA, and that’s what the people want: Take action or not take action,” Dalrymple told The Grand Forks Herald.
