Pomo man named director of Indian education in South Dakota

Roger Campbell will serve as director of Indian Education for South Dakota.

Campbell, who is Pomo, is a member of the Round Valley Indian Tribes of California. But he grew up in South Dakota and previously served as director of the state Office of Tribal Government Relations.

"Having grown up in South Dakota and through his professional experiences, Roger has cultivated strong relationships with tribal and community leaders. He understands how state and tribal governments work, and this experience will be key in developing the government-to-government relationships that tribes have asked for from the state's various agencies," Stacy Phelps, a member of the Indian Education Advisory Council and the State Board of Education, told the Associated Press.

Campbell was selected for the job by the advisory council, the board and staff from the state Department of Education.
