Elected officials of Cherokee Nation due for increase in salary

Elected officials of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma are due for an 11 percent increase in salary over the next four years.

A citizen committee has recommended the increase, a council member said. If adopted, council members will receive about $50,000 per year, up from the current annual salary of $36,000.

"Money should not be the motivation for this job," Tina Glory-Jordan said during a discussion on the salary increase, The Tahlequah Daily Press reported.

The council passed legislation that will allow the committee's recommendations to go into effect unless the council passes a bill that explicitly rejects the recommendations.
