Chairman of Southern Ute Tribe confirms resignation from post

Matthew Box has resigned as chairman of the Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado, The Durango Herald reports.

Box told The Pine River News on Thursday that he was staying in office. But sometime later, he decided to step down, and he told employees to take today off.

“No explanation," for the unexpected holiday, a spokesperson told the paper.

Box has faced criticism for his handling of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe Growth Fund. Tribal members said he mismanaged the tribe's money.

Box survived a recall election in December 2010 when not enough voters turned out. But other tribal leaders demanded his resignation.
