Morongo Band woman receives presidential award for mentoring

Marigold Linton, a member of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians in California, received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring during a ceremony at the White House last Thursday.

Linton was the first Native American to attend University of California, Riverside. She has dedicated her life to mentoring American Indian and other minority students.

"Marigold overcame a childhood of poverty and racial intolerance to become one of the nation's leading educators,'' Chairman Robert Martin said in a statement, The Palm Springs Desert Sun reported. “Her story personifies the high importance our tribe places on the transformational value of education in children's lives.”

Linton will receive $10,000 to further her efforts.
