Letter: Respect tribal decisions about 'Fighting Sioux' nickname

"I am writing about the Fighting Sioux nickname legislation that has been proposed in the North Dakota Legislature.

As a UND student who has worked closely with this issue since 2005, I can’t begin to explain how the controversy has worn on me over the years.

My goal is not to list all of the incidents that American Indian students including myself have experienced as a result of the nickname and logo. I have respectfully held discussions with people of a different perspective on the logo on multiple occasions; I know now that most times, we just have to agree to disagree.

So, I am not asking lawmakers to change their personal perspective on the logo. Instead, I’m asking them to oppose this legislation on behalf of the university and the welfare of the students."
