The U.S Attorney's Office in Montana announced the "Fearless Justice Initiative" to protect victims and witnesses in federal cases in Indian Country.
The U.S. Attorney will work with the FBI to prevent retaliation against victims and witnesses. The program was announced just after a man from the Fort Belknap Reservation was sentenced to nine for threatening a witness in a murder case.
"The beginning of Fearless Justice is today," FBI Special Agent Scott Cruse said at a press conference, The Great Falls Tribune reported. "We have seen retaliation against witnesses and victims in the past and we are taking a firm stand."
U.S. Attorney Mike Cotter said witness intimidation "happens all too often" in Indian Country, the paper reported.
