Winfred Red Cloud, Oglala Sioux Tribe elder, passes away at 60

Winfred Red Cloud, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, died on Friday. He was 60.

Red Cloud was raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He became involved with the American Indian Movement in the 1970s, participated in the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973 and served time in prison for challenging the federal government.

"The things that were promised his people were not delivered," Diane Bremer told The Republican Red Eagle. His experience led him to become a spiritual adviser to Indian inmates.

Red Cloud married into the Prairie Island Indian Community in Minnesota and became involved in tribal affairs there. He served as the tribe's cultural liaison and tobacco prevention specialist and was known for his work with tribal youth.
