Maurice A. John Sr. announced his candidacy for president of the Seneca Nation of New York and vowed to go to "war" with opponents of the tribe's sovereignty.
John, 62, previously served as president and as treasurer. He said he will defend the tribe from the state's effort to impose a tobacco tax on the reservation.
“We’re not at war with Mario Cuomo, his son or [Carl] Paladino. We’re at war with whoever is trying to take away our sovereignty,”
The two candidates for state governor, Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Carl
Paladino, support the tobacco tax.
