Members of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians elected former president Tom Maulson to the tribe's top position on Tuesday.
Maulson defeated incumbent Jerome "Brooks" Big John by 118 votes. He said he wants to restore accountability to the tribe, which has been hit by leadership squabbles and financial turmoil.
"My goal is to bring transparency to its fullest and make sure our tribal leaders will be able to know exactly what I know," Maulson told The Lakeland Times. "It's time now that we roll up our sleeves and get to work for our community."
Maulson is a named plaintiff in the Indian trust fund
lawsuit.
