Candidates for New Mexico seat receive tribal endorsements
Two candidates for the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission are touting their tribal ties.

Theresa Becenti-Aguilar, a member of the Navajo Nation, is the Democratic candidate for the District 4 seat. Gary J. Montoya, who lives on the Navajo Nation and is married to a Navajo woman, is the Republican nominee.

Becenti-Aguilar has been serving in the District 4 seat since July. She previously served as Native American liaison for the PRC and has won endorsements from the All Indian Pueblo Council, Cochiti Pueblo, Kewa Pueblo and Jemez Pueblo.

Montoya, who lives in Shiprock, won an endorsement from the Northern Navajo Agency Council. He says he will focus on poverty and unemployment in the district.

The election takes place November 2.
