Alaska Native groups back Sen. Murkowski for write-in campaign
Alaska Native tribes, organizations and corporations are supporting Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) in her write-in campaign.

The legislative committee of the Alaska Federation of Natives said it will support Murkowski and the entire membership of AFN will consider an endorsement at its upcoming convention next month. “The Alaska Native community will be there for her,” AFN co-chairman Al Kookesh told The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. “We owe her so much.”

Besides AFN's committee, 11 tribes and corporations are supporting Murkowski over Joe Miller, an attorney who has the backing of the Tea Party movement. Miller won the Republican primary.

Since joining the Senate, Murkowski has become a strong advocate for law enforcement, health care and other needs in rural Alaska Native villages. She also has defended Alaska Native corporations from attacks on their government contracts.
