About 100 people took part in the annual Katahdin Spiritual Run, a 100-mile journey to the sacred Mount Katahdin.
Participants make the journey by canoe, bike and foot. The trip takes them through the Penobscot River, to the base of the mountain.
“We use modern equipment, modern canoes, modern bikes, and we have expensive sneakers, but we still carry eagle feathers,” Penobscot Nation elder Butch Phillips told The Bangor Daily News. “Everything we do reminds us of our connection to nature, the river and our ancestors, and this gives us strength.”
For next year's 30th anniversary of the run, organizers hope representatives of all four of Maine's tribes -- Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet and Micmac -- take part.
