PETA to put up billboards targeting Eastern Cherokee bear parks

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is putting up four billboards to warn people not to visit the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina.

PETA opposes the treatment of bears at parks on the reservation. The billboards read, “Warning: Tourist Trap. Avoid Cruel Bear Pits.”

The bear pits led to media attention last summer when former television game show host and animal-rights activist Bob Barker called on the tribe to ban the bear parks. His comments angered tribal leaders and members.
