Sen. Dorgan introduces bill for Missouri River compensation study
Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, introduced a bill to address the impacts of Missouri River construction on tribes.

The 1944 Flood Control Act led to the creation of dams along the river. Tribes in North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska lost hundreds of thousands of acres of prime land and were forced to uproot some of their communities.

Congress compensated the tribes but some say not all of the impacts have been addressed. Dorgan's bill would create a Pick-Sloan Tribal Commission to study the issues and make recommendations on how to resolve them.
