The Picayune Rancheria of the
Chukchansi Indians in California will break ground on a $5 million commercial complex next month that will feature the first Indian gas station in the area.
The 25,000-square-foot Chukchansi Crossing project is expected to open next year. The tribe plans to use its sovereign status to offer lower-priced gasoline.
"We're going to be pricing it as aggressively as we can," Case Lawrence, the chief executive of Mighty Oak Capital, the
tribe's investment vehicle, told The Fresno Bee.
The project also will include a convenience store, restaurants and retail outlets.
