Omaha Tribe seeks compensation for use of cultural property
The Omaha Tribal Historical Research Project is asking the University of Nebraska Foundation to set aside money to compensate the Omaha Tribe for the use of its cultural property.

Dennis Hastings, the project's founder, says the university has benefited from selling materials about the tribe's language and heritage. A letter seeks 10 percent of the endowment, or about $120 million.

Tribal members and tribal leaders have recently voiced concerns about the work of Mark Awakuni-Swetland, a non-tribal member who has published books about Omaha language and culture.
