Standing Rock Sioux Tribe ends discussion on Fighting Sioux
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe passed a resolution to end discussion on the controversial "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

Supporters of the nickname wanted the tribe to schedule a referendum on the issue. But the resolution said the tribe has more important priorities.

"This is our final decision because there are too many other priority matters that must be dealt with,” council member Jesse Taken Alive told The Grand Forks Herald. “The motion stipulated that there is no need to talk about it any more.”

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education voted to retire the name but supporters hoped the outcome of a Standing Rock referendum would change the board's mind. The Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation already voted to support the nickname.
