Oneida Nation woman is Haskell's oldest living graduate
Maria Hinton, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, is the oldest living graduate of Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas.

Hinton, 99, earned her diploma in 1929, when Haskell was still a high school. “It was a tough time,” Hinton said at a reception for her at the school, The Lawrence Journal-World.

Hinton is a month away from turning 100. She has dedicate her life to preserving tribal culture, including the Oneida language.

Hinton's grandson is Ernie Stevens Jr., the chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association.
