A newly elected leader of the Mushuau Innu First Nation in Labrador has pleaded guilty to violating the reserve's ban on liquor.

Deputy chief Simon Pokue campaigned against the ban. When he spoke about it for a CBC News story last month, he had already been arrested on a liquor charge.

Pokue admitted to having about $500 worth of alcohol in his possession, CBC reported. He was sentenced to six months' probation.

Newly elected chief Simeon Tshakapesh also opposes the ban.
