A dispute over the firing of a school administrator on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana is getting thornier.

The Northern Cheyenne Tribal School board trustees fired principal/superintendent Elberta Monroe for the second time on Monday. Critics said Monroe lacked qualifications for the job and was not managing the school properly.

But the tribal council issued an executive order on Tuesday that overruled Monroe's firing, disbanded the school board and barred the trustees from going on campus. A hearing was scheduled for Monday to consider Monroe's case.

“It seems like a power struggle but it’s not because the power lies with the tribal council,” tribal council member Jace Killsback told The Billings Gazette.
